Are you running your race

Happy Friday!I thought I would share an email I sent to my Working Mom Workouts list last year! It still applies today one year later as my daughter out of nowhere the other day asked to watch the movie again. You will see what I am talking about. Enjoy the last day of Summer!

I just love the Fall! I know I have said that before
but there is just something about opening the door and feeling that
cool crisp air hit you in the face!

Shoot, this past Summer for us it was like 85 degrees at 6 am, so
when I walk outside and it is 60 degrees I am a little giddy! And
since I am feeling a little kiddy today I wanted to write about
something I have been thinking about for a few months now!

A few months back my mother had recommended that we rent the movie
“Secretariat” and watch it with kids. Well, I was a little
reluctant only because my youngest daughter had yet to turn three
and we were not sure if she could sit through the entire movie.

Boy, were we wrong! Sit through the movie, shoot, as I am writing
this to you today my daughter wakes up every morning asking me to
put on “Secretariat.”

Yes, since the night we watched the movie my daughter has fallen in
love with horses and we not only rented “Secretariat” again but
finally purchased it for her birthday that just passed.

Let me tell you after watching it for the like umpteenth time I
feel like I can be an expert film critic. Now, if you have never
seen the movie I recommend you rent it and watch it because it
really is good and has some very good lessons in it, as is the case
with most Disney films!

And that is what I want to talk to you today about, a lesson that I
believe we all need to be reminded about. I know your time is
valuable, so I won’t go into the entire film but Secretariat won the
“Triple Crown.”

The “Triple Crown” has only been one by a few horses in history and
is almost considered to be an impossible feat to accomplish. And
during the time period of the movie the last “Triple Crown” winner
was some 25 years earlier, so the odds of Secretariat winning it
was very slim.

Now, here is where the lesson comes in. You see, what had happened
was the father and owner of the ranch had passed away, leaving the family at odds on what to do with the ranch and the taxes owed on it. Going against her family, the
daughter, Penney Tweedy, took over the ranch and put everything on the line. She didn’t care about the money or losing everything instead she believed in carrying out her dad’s legacy and was willing to sacrifice everything just to see the horse “run it’s race!”

The daughter turned down 8 million dollars because she believed
that much in what she was doing!

So, what does this have to do with you? Well, while we were
watching the movie I had said to my daughter, “Ady, run your race”
and she said back to me, “No Daddy, you run your race!”

And that is where it hit me. Each and everyone of us has our own
race to run. At times things be can extremely difficult and the
easiest option might be to sell out and quit.

However, all you need is a little belief. Believe that no matter
what happens you gave it your best and you didn’t quit!

The odds may be against you but the one thing that no one can take
away from you is your belief. I believe in you but you need to start
believing in you!

Now, go out and “Run Your Race!”

To your success,
Coach Dave

What Kind of Choices Are You Making in Your Small Business

Happy Friday everyone!

Today, I wanted to bring you a quick video from one of my mentors. John Maxwell is an expert on leadership and has written a number of best selling books. He also puts out these short videos in which he calls them ” A Minute with Maxwell.” I really like these short videos because in them he communicates a powerful lesson in just a minutes time. So, today I wanted to introduce to his “Minute with Maxwell.” Plus, I wanted to share with you this particular one he talks about because as a small business owner we do this everyday.

So, let me ask you, “What choices are you making today that will enhance your business?” Has the economy brought you done and have you blaming it for your lack of success? Trust me, I know how easy it is to fall into that trap, but as Maxwell says, “It is your personal responsibility for the choices you make.”

Think about that over the weekend and we will see you next week. Until then remember it is the choices you make that will determine your success!

To your success,
Coach Dave

Do you know what your Financial IQ is?

Hello everyone! Happy Friday! I mentioned last week that I was going to start a new weekly post that talks about financial intelligence, so this week I have a simple question for you, but before I get to that let me answer a question I received from a reader on financial intelligence. Dave, “Why should I care about financial intelligence? I come in do my job get paid and make a decent living!” Making a great living is great and most of you probably are more interested in reading something else or more interested in seeing what your friends are doing on Facebook. That is fine but I have decided that my intent for this blog going forward is to help people create a life that allows financial freedom. For some of you having a good paying job is all you are gong to what out of life, but for a few of you I know you want to create a life that allows you to live your dreams and have the freedom to do what you want. So, with that being said, if you aspire to have financial freedom then these weekly posts are going to be helpful for you!

Okay, moving on to the topic today, Financial IQ. What is your Financal IQ? Don’t worry I had no idea what mine was until I started reading and studying Robert Kiyosaki. In his books he lays it out in a simple way, so I thought that instead of me trying to explain why don’t I let him explain it to you. Check out this link and read the short post. Once you have done that you will have a better idea of what the heck I am talking about when I say Financial IQ. If you are anything like I was when I first read it I was shocked at what I thought I knew and what I thought were assets.

Let me know what your Financial IQ is by posting your comments.

Until next week,
In health and wealth

It is Time for Financial Education

Happy Friday everyone! It is just awesome here today in Dallas. We have had highs in 70’s all week. Who would have thought that, considering some 18 days ago we encountered the worst ice storm in 75 years and temps did not make it above 20 degrees. I guess they are right when they say, ‘If you live in Dallas, if you don’t like the weather, just wait a little bit because it will change.” Well, I am not here talk about the groundhog’s predication of an earlier Spring being correct, but what I am here to talk to you today is something that I am very passionate about, which is financial education.

For years, I have been studying and learning about money. I am not sure why that is the case, but I have always had a passion for business and money. So, as I read in one of Ken Blanchard’s books, “If you want to truly understand what you have read and learned you must go teach it to someone”, and that is what I intend on doing going forward. I know this is not for everyone or at least some people will think that, but you see, it does not mater what profession you are in or your financial status in life, if you do not have a strong financial education, you are going to be in trouble moving ahead in today’s economy. Shoot, I know some highly paid professionals, who yes, make a lot of money, but are uneducated when it comes to financial education. When the recession hit, they took a big hit in their savings. With just a little financial education that could have been prevented. So, the time is now to learn financial education if you want to succeed. Don’t let lack of knowledge keep you from being successful.

So, what am I referring to when I talk about financial education? It is the knowledge about how money works and how to leverage it to work for you. Some people have told me that they took economics and accounting in school, which is great but that is not going to help you be financially secure in this new economy. You need to understand how money works and how to make your money work for you. I hear all the time that the rich are getting richer and the middle class is getting squeezed out. You know what, they are right, the middle class is getting squeezed out and the rich are getting richer. Why? Well, they know how the rules of the game are played and they know how to use it in their favor.

Well, why should you care? Because I want to see you live the dream. I want to see you have everything that you want out of life. Money can’t buy happiness but it can help give you opportunities and freedom to do the things you want to do in life. I know there will be some people who will disagree with what I am going to be saying in these posts and that is fine but what I hope to do is give you just enough knowledge and education to stay competitive in this new world.

Here is what you can expect in some future posts:
What is your financial IQ?
History of money and how the decisions your leaders make affect your financial success.
Assets vs. Liabilities – why most people are wrong to think their house is an assesst
Should you stop contributing to your 401K?
Should you live below your means?

These are just some of the ideas I plan on sharing with you. If you have anything that you would like to talk about in regards to financial eduction please feel free to leave a comment. Also, I would love to hear your feedback good or bad on anything we talk about here.

Well, I have my daughter’s first soccer game this weekend. I don’t know who is more excited her or me :)!!

Make it a great weekend!
In health,
Coach Dave
