Dave McGarry’s 2011 Goals

Wow, I did not realize that I would have had such a response from my post yesterday but I appreciate all the feedback. Anyway, as I was saying yesterday I do not set resolutions but set goals for the year. Also, I said that I would be sharing my goals for the 2011 fiscal year and I will later this week but today I want to share with you the process I go through in case you would like to set up goals instead of resolutions. Below you will see the process.

The first thing I do when I set my goals for the year is, I break them up into specific categories. The following categories are the ones I use. Feel free to use all these for your goals or pick 4 or 5 to start with.

  • Business
  • Financial
  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Spiritual
  • Relationships
  • Family
  • Lifestyle

Now, I go through each catagory and come up with four goals for each one. From there, I then go through the list and pick my top ten goals for the year. Next to each goal I mark the corresponding symbol from each category.  Ex.) If I say work out 4x a week, I mark a (P) next to the goal. I do this for each of the ten I listed.

Once I have my top ten and they are marked with the corresponding symbol, I then go back and look to see which areas I am focusing more on and make sure that sits well with want I really want to accomplish for the year. Sometime it will take me a few drafts to get my goals refined but it is well worth it in the end. If you are new to goal setting don’t get overwhelmed by it. These are your goals, so just start by setting some up and you can always go back later and change them, which I will be writing about later this year.  If you are stuck and want more info on how I do this send me an email and I will help you out.

Coming up part 2 of Dave McGarry’s 2011 Goals. I will be reveiling my goals for the year! See you then!

Live Like You Are Dying

May is the worst month and best month of the year for me. Today, marks the 4 year anniversary of my father’s passing and tomorrow will be the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing. If that isn’t enough, my brother and cousin passed away in the following weeks. So, you can see why the first part of May is not so good for me. My wife actually would like to lock me up and keep me quarantined until June, but I am not scared and I am pressing on.

Okay, so where does the good part come into play for me, you might ask? Actually, every year when I am reminded of my family members who are no longer with me  I get a sense of rejuvenation and a spirit of re-birth. I use their passing as a way to motivate me to do the things that I have said I want to accomplish before it is my time to leave.

I am just curious, how many of you say to yourself,  ” I will do that tomorrow or I will experience that next year because I am too busy.”  Let me tell you, don’t put off what you can do today for tomorrow because tomorrow might never come. I spoke to my dad hours before he passed away from a heart attack and we were talking about how in a few months he was going to come out to see me in Texas! That day, sadly, never happened and it always sits hard knowing that we should have gotten him out sooner to see us.

I hope you understand what I am trying to say here. I want you to realize that we only have a certain amount of time on this planet to make a difference, and  if you have goals that you want to accomplish or have always wanted to start your own business, today is a great day to get started.

Now, with that being said, I want to make sure I am leading by example here. So, here is what I am going to stop putting off.  For the longest time now I have had a goal to start a membership site for my business ,and today I am going to start taking action by announcing to you that, How to Train and Grow Rich has officially been started. I am working on the specifics, but initially the site will be geared towards fitness professionals, personal trainers, and group exercise instructors, however, the site can help just about anybody who wants to learn how to create passive revenue streams and develop the lifestyle they want to live. Once  I have everything mapped out I will give an update ,but for now I wanted to take action and announce my intentions.

So, what can you do today that you have been putting off? Take action, because tomorrow may be too late. As for me, I will celebrate the lives of my family by striving to become  a better father, husband, and business coach. Also I will strive to live out each day to its fullest.

In memory of you Dad, Gramps, Kevin, and Sheila. I will always love you!

Have you made many Resolutions for 2010?

Have you made many resolutions for 2010? Is this the year that you are going to stick to those resolutions you made? Now, most people make resolutions but few keep them. Why? Well, with it being the New Year the intention and determination is there to change but people fail because of two reason.  One, the lack of specific goals and two, is the lack of a plan to achieve those goals.

First, let’s talk about goals. Saying that you are going to make more money or get more clients is not specific. What you need to do is state specifically how much more money do you want to make. As for getting more clients, how many? The goal needs to be specific and measurable. Once you have your goals formulated you need to write them down. I hear from personal trainers all the time that I have them in my head. Sorry, if it is not written down on paper it is not a goal. Writing it down creates a record of what you want to achieve and there is no way of disputing what your goals are if they are written down.

The second step to achieve success is to create a plan. When you have your goals written down you need to break them down into smaller steps. For instance if you said you wanted to increase your income by 10% then step 1 might be to get one new client a week (52 by year end). Another might be to do more group training. The important thing here is to break the larger goal into smaller steps to ultimately lead to the larger goal. Oh, and one more important thing to add here is you need a time table and deadline. This was something I neglected to do for  long time but once I set a deadline I began to notice my success in accomplishing my goals increased.

Okay, do me a favor and take some time and sit down and implement these two tips into your New Year’s resolutions and see yourself accomplish more this year than in years past! Make 2010 the best year ever!

Rebirth and Renewal

I am so excited because tonight starts my three day vacation with my family. Every year we try and make it down to the Dallas Arboretum to spend some time relaxing and taking in the beautiful flowers and scenario that the Arboretum has to offer. This brings me to my point of discussion today and that is with the Easter weekend upon us we need to take some time and reflect upon what we have be doing the last 12 weeks and open our eyes and take in what is going on around us. If you were smart, which I know if you are reading this you are, then I know that you have been going full tilt the last 3 months because these first three months of the year can really make a difference in your business. However, it is now time to relax and renew your strengths for the next 3 months. We all need rest and recovery and I hope you will take this holiday weekend to reflect on your goals and the good you are doing in people’s lives. I wish you a healthy and happy Easter and I will see you next week!
