Get IN Your Game

Now that the Super Bowl is over, it’s time to get out of the stands and into the game of YOUR life.
Now I’m all for the spirit, entertainment and release that goes along with cheering on a sports team. At the same time, I do find it odd that many people spend time following and studying the lives of other people more than they do their own.
Again, catching a sporting event when it is on is all good fun; I watched the Super Bowl too (cost me money – lost a bet with my ‘cheese head’ editor in chief). What I’m talking about is the investment some people give to the sports and careers other people are playing and living.

Think about it: What if the time you spend…

  • reading the sports page, you read a self-improvement book?
  • listening to sports talk radio, you listen to an instructional CD?
  • watching ESPN or Sports Center, you watch a seminar DVD or read a book?
  • talking about sports scores and players, you talk about your goals and plans to achieve them?
  • playing fantasy sports, you role-play your key skills training?

How would the trade of that time investment change your life scores and statistics? I’m certain it would make YOU victorious… and far happier.

Oh, and let’s not leave out the non-sports fans. What if the time you spend…

  • reading People magazine and other gossip rags, you read SUCCESS magazine?
  • watching E! Entertainment, TMZ or Access Hollywood, you watched a seminar DVD or read a book?
  • watching Keeping Up With the Kardashians, The Real Housewives, or Jersey Shore, you read a book about YOUR reality?
  • talking (or gossiping) about other people’s lives and foibles, you talked about your lessons learned in life and plans for growth?

How would the trade of that time investment change your life scores and statistics? I’m certain it would make you victorious, and far happier.

What Is Self Help

What is Self Help?

George Carlin on self help:
“I went to the bookstore and asked the salesperson, ‘where’s the self-help section?’ She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.”

This type of reality shock may be a turning point where you discover that you have to depend on you.

The turning point for most of us comes when we realize we can improve our lot in life. The moment we accept that we are not controlled by outside events; rather, we are dominated by your own thoughts and actions.

It is at this point in time that most of us turn to some sort of self help.

Webster defines self help as the action or process of bettering oneself or overcoming one’s problems without the aid of others. Changing ones self.

The Four Types of Self Help.

Self help can be designated as one of four types:

1. The AHA or epiphany moment – where a person has a dramatic moment of absolute clarity and direction. Their life pivots and is never the same.
Like the moment when an alcoholic  hits  bottom.
It is the instant when a realization impacts your consciousness, and you know that life must change and only you can change it.
It can be a moment when the solution to a problem, you’ve been struggling with, becomes crystal clear. You know without a doubt how to deal with it.

2. One on one help comes when you feel you can no longer handle the situation alone, you can no longer keep everything inside.
You may seek counseling with a psychologist, therapist, or spiritual leader.
Perhaps you simply talk to a confidant such as your best friend.

3. Group interaction.  Groups emphasize face to face interaction.
The act or state of solving one’s problems by joining or forming a group designed to help those suffering from a particular problem, such as Alcoholics Anonymous or other twelve step programs.
There are many help programs through community, churches, social groups; or paid groups such as those for weight loss and so forth.
Self help groups are voluntary. They are for the mutual aid and accomplishment of a special purpose. It is a group of peers coming together for common mutual assistance. 

4. Individual self help can be accomplished by reading and reeducating your self. You gain clarity into a problem or situation and overcome it by yourself.
It usually involves reading and studying self help books and doing research. 
Otherwise know as self improvement, self help refers to the acts of an individual to improve themselves with or without assistance from anyone else.

The term, self help, refers to any measure used to improve mental, physical, financial or spiritual conditions. By means of books or other reference materials.

It is the act of providing help for oneself without assistance from others.

Individual self help emphasizes change done by oneself, like coping with one’s personal or emotional problems without professional help.

I’ve personally participated in all four types. They are all beneficial.

I still attend meetings, conduct individual and group sessions and write self help Ebooks. Don’t limit yourself to any one.

Self help is the acquiring of information for the solving of one’s problems. Those of a psychological nature, without direct supervision of professionals or experts. Independent reading, joining lay groups pertaining to your problem.

Read a book, an article, or take a home study course that offers information or counseling intended to be personally beneficial or profitable IE: self help books.

The best way to bring about change and self improvement is to begin.

Albert Einstein said:
“Nothing happens until something moves.”

The healthy spirit of self help serves to raise people from despair.

It  advances them in intelligence, virtue, and spiritual growth.

Four actions you need to take before you set out on the road to self help:
  1. Forgive yourself
  2. Forgive others
  3. Accept yourself
  4. Accept others

Samuel Smiles:
“The spirit of self-help is the root of all genuine growth in the individual.”

Jim Rohn:
“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plans. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”

Whichever type or types of self help you choose it should:
  Be beneficial not harmful
  Improve your attitude
  Positively change your behavior
  Improve your environment
  Educate your subconsciousness
  Enlighten your consciousness
  Include self forgiveness
  Bring about self acceptance
  Improve your self esteem

John Wooden:
“Remember this, the choices you make in life, make you”

Summary

Apply what you learn and make real the life you’ve always dreamed of living.

Too often we limit ourselves. How sad, when we could learn to live extraordinary lives.

We can be happier, healthier, and more prosperous. Find your source(s) of self help and go for it.

Do you Have a Dream?

Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King day in our county and as I am writing this I am returning from D.C. I absolutely love going to D.C. and love visiting all the sights no matter how many times I see them, which brings me to what I want to talk to you about today. You see, Dr. King, as well as our founding fathers had a dream. They dreamed of freedom for all and a place where all people were equal. They had a vision for a better world. So, I am asking you today, what are your dreams? What do you want your life, career and world you live in to be like? You were put on this earth for a purpose and you should be dreaming of better you, better career, and a better world. I know not everyone considers himself or herself a dreamer, but you should be. That being the case there are a couple of things I want to recommend for you to start doing.

A few years ago I was listening to a CD by Jim Rohn, who was talking about having a better life. One of the mental exercises he had us do was to take a few minutes and imagine that there were no obstacles in your way and to write down 50 things you wanted to do in life. Write down every thing no matter how small or big. He said, to just let you mind wander and see where it takes you. Now, I have to admit I had a hard time at first coming up with 50 things, but once I started t o dream of all things I wanted to do in my life and what kind of legacy I want to leave the pen started to just write. It was a great exercise because today as I am writing this I still have that list on my desk. I look at it from time to time and am amazed at how much I have started to achieve. I have said it before and I will say it again you need to write down your goals and have it somewhere you will see them on a regular basis.

Now, having gone through that exercise was great but the next step I am going to recommend coincides with Jim’s exercise, but takes it a step further. You see, most of us learn better through visualization. That being the case you need to take those goals and create what is called a “Dream Board.” This will take a little longer but print out pictures of the things you want to have or accomplish in your life. Fill the board with as many as you can fit on there. Remember these are your dreams so go big!
So, in closing, celebrate and honor Dr. King by having a dream. Dream to become better. Dream to be more. And dream to make a difference in this world.

Are you one of the 47 percent?

We are a couple of weeks into the New Year and I know some of you are still getting around to setting those resolutions. As I said in an earlier post, ” New Year’s Resolutions are a Wast of Time” I do not set resolutions I set up a plan for the year that has my top goals. Well, I guess I am not the only one that doesn’t set goals resolutions anymore. According to a recent survey by the Opinion Research Corp. only 45 percent of Americans now say they make New Year’s resolutions, which is down from 88 percent from the past. At first thought I was thinking maybe they read my post and have decided to turn over a new leaf and start setting up goals and a plan for the new year. Nope, the study goes on to say that people just don’t set them anymore because they are tired of hurting themselves and call the whole thing off. Pretty sad if you ask me but I am not really all that shocked about the finding. The survey had some other interesting findings but one in particular stood out to me. The one that stuck out in my mind was that 47 percent of those responded to the survey said, ” they will set a resolution related to their head” (i.e, a self improvement goal). Now maybe because I love self improvement but this was encouraging to me. So, today I want to ask you, do you fall into the 47 percent category?

I hope you answered yes to the question above, because if you want more out of life or career you have to become more. I learned that from the great Jim Rohn. What happens to most of us is, we get so caught up with all the daily nuances we neglect working on becoming a better person. I know for me I need to work on time management and finishing projects I start. I get so caught up with new ideas that I let projects go unfinished. I have made that a goal of mine this year and I hope by the end of the year I can look back and say I became better.

What is it that you need to get better at? Maybe it is time management or maybe organization skills. Whatever it is, make it one of your goals this year to get better at, because I can promise you this, if you work harder on yourself you can become more and be more!

Well, I am off to D.C. for the weekend to attend a good friend’s wedding. I just love going to our Nation’s Capitol, because it always reminds of how great it is to live in the best country in the world.I will be back next week with some more inspiring stuff, so until then, make it a great weekend!

Knocked on Your Tush (Part 2 of 4)

Continuing our series on what you do when you get knocked on your keister, let me lay out a four-point plan you can use to overcome any obstacle you will ever face in life—a plan to turn any tragedy or setback into triumph.

Here is No. 1: I interviewed Roger Crawford recently, who was born with a physical handicap that affected all four of his limbs from the elbows down and from the knees down, leaving him with two fingers on his left wrist on one on his right, a partially developed right leg with three toes, and his left leg from the knee down was amputated. But he became a world-class tennis player, recognized by Sports Illustrated as one of the most accomplished athletes in history.
During our interview Roger made this very profound statement: “We are, often times, the one who creates our own handicaps.” Meaning, many times our obstacles are self-induced. Or, even real obstacles continue to have a hold on us because of these mental handicaps. I think we lose proper perspective. So true.

A few nights ago my wife was feeling a bit stressed and down about a project that had not gone according to plan. She left the house in a bummed out mood and came back a transformed human being. I asked her what the heck happened and she told me the story of Jimmy…
Jimmy always has a big giant smile on his face. Jimmy cleans people’s fingernails and toenails for a living. Georgia, curious why this man is always so happy, asked how he grew up. Jimmy explained he was one of nine from a very large Vietnamese family. Jimmy’s father had been loyal to the American military during the Vietnam War. He was ordered to pay restitution, which was promised to be an imprisonment term of 2 1/2 weeks. Three and a half years later, weak, starving and brutalized in what turned out to be a labor camp, his father was released.
